Centre Street (East)

Centre Street east of the Square lead to Wilkes-Barre's burying ground. Purchased in 1772 for £9 10d, it extended from later day Washington Street to later day Canal Street to and from Centre Street half way to Union.

The land fronting the north side of Centre Street was owned by John P. Schott and the south side by Putnam Catlin. Part of Putnam Catlin's land at the corner of later day Washington Street was to be the site of the new Luzerne County jail.

The land east of Catlin's extending to Back Street was owned by Hugh Conner, an Irish-born carpenter who came to Wilkes-Barre from Poughkeepsie, New York, and in the early 1790's built the benches for the first Luzerne County courthouse.
